Résumé
People smoke more now than ever before ; but all too often they only acquire an unthinking habit, and neglect the subtleties of an art both ancient and universal. Alfred Dunhill, whose many years of experience have given him an intimate knowledge both academic and practical need of a book which will help the modern smoker to cultivate less of a habit and more of a pleasure. In this book, which is at once historical, technical and practical, he has admirably satisfied this need. Here is told the story of smoking as it has existed from earliest times in europe, Asia and Africa. Opinions of it varied from the belief of the American Indians in the magical properties of smoke, to the condemnation of James I, to whom the practice 'resembled the horrible Stigian smoke of the pit that is bottomless'. then follow all the fashions oh smoking through the centuries-pipes, snuff, cigars - and so to cigarettes which began to appear after the Crimean War. The history of pipes, whixh is told here, is a fascinating one, since many of them are intimately connected with the habits and beliefs of the peoples among which they are found. Here are descriptions of primitive makeshift pipes made from plantain leaf, or crab's claws ; of 'earth-pipes' which used a mound and a hole in the earth ; of the metal pipes of Japan, chased and ornemented with ivory, jade and lacquer. Here also is the story of snuff, brought to England by the Restauration Court on its retourn from France - a fashion which shows signs of regaining its popularity. The manufacture of cigars is also described in all its finer points. Lastly, some advice on the care and choice of pipes, tobaccos and cigars helps to make this book both a history of a universal art and a guide to the pleasures of smoking.
